Teodor Sucharzewski was born in Slawacinek, Poland on February 22, 1910. He grew up in this small village, just 170 km from Warsaw. It took Teodor five years to finish his apprenticeship in Biala Podlaska with his uncle Peter Sucharzewski, the master watchmaker. In 1958 Teodor received his Master Watchmaker Certificate. Before war broke out, he opened his own shop, and continued the shop after the war, until he retired. Over his many years in business Teodor earned a reputation as the best watchmaker in the city. Teodor's son Voldi was destined to follow in his footsteps. Voldi began training as a young boy. For three years he worked on all types of clocks, making parts and rebuilding them. Before he could work on watches, he had to learn the basics of the mechanism. "It required a lot of patience. When I was 14 or 16 years old, I would have rather played with my friends outside," Voldi now laughs. As he grew he began to understand and enjoy the fine artistry and technical mastery watch and clock repair demanded. "My father was strict," Voldi speaks of his father's teaching. "Short cuts were unacceptable." After a three year apprenticeship, Voldi, like his father, applied for an exam. Voldi achieved Certification when he was 18, and just like dad, he continues the family tradition in watch & clock repair today. Voldi helped manage and run his father's store in Poland for 10 years, until he came to Canada. When he arrived in Toronto in 1988, Voldi worked at a European Jewellers and was exposed to the best and most sophisticated watches on the American and World Market. In 1991 he received a Canadian certificate in Watch Making. With his combined experience from Poland and here in Canada, and with a passion for his art, Voldi has an enormous advantage over most Canadian watchmakers. |
